One of the best springs of my life was the spring my wife, Kathy, and I took off and camped our way across the Southwest. We hit the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Arches and the Anasazi ruins at Mesa Verde in one wondrous trip. The weather was mostly mild and pleasant, although we did get some snow at Bryce Canyon, which made the delicately frilly rocks seem even more magical.

And since school hadn’t let out yet, we didn’t run into crowds anywhere. We felt like we had the most beautiful places on Earth all to ourselves.
